In Alberta, individuals with accessibility needs were facing wait times of up to two years to receive government-funded wheelchairs, delaying access to essential equipment for a fulfilling life. The government’s outdated systems, including a single person managing a fax machine for all intake paperwork, were contributing to the massive backlog.
Through a multi-faceted campaign, THE ADAMS AGENCY created a province-wide media relations approach to put pressure on the government to make substantial change. This included creating an effective advocacy group that was featured in nine in-depth media stories across the province including Global News Edmonton, Global National, Edmonton Journal and CTV Edmonton.
The Alberta government amended legislation to mandate a maximum four-week timeframe for individuals to access the support and equipment they need. To streamline the process, they enlisted Alberta Blue Cross to manage the administrative side moving forward.
